Michael Callahan (Voice)

BIO

Michael Callahan Baritone/Tenor was recently hailed for his performance in the Green Room Theatre's production of Sondheim's "Assassins" as 'intense' with a voice of 'deep beauty' and his performance 'knocked me sideways'.  Michael has been performing for over twenty years and teaching voice for 10 years.  Students enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the development of the entire person as an artistic whole.  Michael is the Music Director at Bethel Wesley United Methodist church in Moline where he conducts the Chancel, Bell and Children's choirs.  He received his Bachelor in Arts Magna Cum Laude from Western Illinois University where he was a winner in the student Concerto Competition.  He received further instruction at West Virginia University.  Mr. Callahan performs in roles varying from ancient greek plays to modern mystery dinner theater.  He is a composer of pop music and a singer of styles from folk to Opera.  He was recently a winner in the 2008 Quad City Playwright's festival for his play "Save Changes".

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that the voice teacher helps a student find his or her own natural sound.  Each student will have a unique vocal journey. While on the vocal journey, I encourage the student to sing with a relaxed and free tone.  A relaxed and free tone allows a vocalist to work efficiently, generating the most sound with the least effort.  A relaxed and free tone will also help the student achieve a vibrant sound that fills a room and allows the greatest range of expression.  Expression will be taught along with confidence.  A confident voice student will not only grow in their ability to perform the classical and broadway repetoire that I base my teaching on, but in any vocal endeavor they have awaiting them in the future.  A strong, confident voice will help a student sing all genres, improve performance in a public speaking and acting situations.
